Let’s face it, any girl from 6-14 knows about the American Girl Dolls. They are often marketed with a series of books that tell the stories of the dolls being sold. Historical fiction has caught on in a big way and what an excellent way for young girls to learn what life was like for young girls of different eras. The authors pay close attention to detail and I would guess probably (when possible) interview people that lived in the era–for they go into great (and quite accurate) detail about life in those times. For example, in 1934 Kit’s father loses his job and the family struggles to find money to maintain the home they live in. One thing the mother does is sew her daughter a dress made from feed sack fabric. Flour sacks were also used during the 30’s and 40’s to make little girls dresses. My own mother had several of her own (in the 1950’s).
I’ve always believed that these dolls were extremely overpriced (the basic doll will set you back around $90); however, I now feel that buying these dolls is not as ludicrous as once thought. It supports an enterprise that’s goal is to produce wholesome, thoughtful entertainment for young girls. In a world where Bratz are all the rage, I must admit I’m sold. I’ll be purchasing a few American Girl Dolls for my daughters in the hope that the company will continue in its endeavor.
At $90 a doll, I doubt the company will be going under anytime soon! But I do agree its a better investment (for many reasons) than a lot of the junk out there. Personally, I prefer getting my daughters a mickey mouse dolls at the dollar tree store. Unfortunately, I am realizing those days are numbered! So I get away with it while I can.
Have you been to the American Girl Doll Factory Store in downtown Chicago??? If getting to downtown Chicago wasn’t so stinking expensive, I’d say its a great ‘free’ date! Regardless, its an excellent deal! Take the train on a weekend, eat at a little hole in the wall place, and then explore the store. Its a blast for the whole family (even I admit that I enjoyed it- though not as much as my daughters and wife). Well if you haven’t done it, its a must do!
Thanks for the recommendation on the movie- I’ll have to rent it for my wife and daughters, myself and Caleb will go in the other room and watch Transformers!
All the American Girl Movies ROCK!! You can find them through the local library (at least that’s what we did) and they are great. I have in the past and still continue to scoff at the notion of a $90 doll (gasp….what would Dave Ramsey say?) but how else can they keep those books and movies coming?
At any rate, I’ll try to get the girls downtown…I heard the Lego store was next door. My little guy would love that. Thanks for commenting.
The lego store is close by and fun! The Legoland Discovery Center is in Schaumburg, and it is a blast. But make sure you get coupons (like buy 1 ticket get 1 free) otherwise it is a rip off.
Hmmmm…. should I comment? heehee I will just say that I agree that the store is an awesome time! We had a fantastic time at my daughter’s birthday party this summer (ahem). And, honestly she still plays with the doll quite frequently. Excellent quality and like you said, I find the stories behind the dolls much classier and educational than some of the other dolls. These dolls actually dress like the little girls they represent, “make-up-less” face and all! The whole experience going there was just wonderful. Even the little one had a blast (and mommy, too). Definitely pricey, but absolutely worth it! Will be doing it again.
